Based upon the ideas of Tom Turner from the University of Greenwich, UK
Dr. Burley suggests:

We are entering the post post-modern era
Beaux Arts 1820s-1920s;
Modern 1880s-1980s;
Post-modern 1970s-1990s;
Post post-modern 1990s-forward

we are in the age of context sensitive design where five dimensions for planning, design, construction, and environmental management co-dominate and are expressed in the built environment and biospheric settings: function (such as sustainability, efficiency, and effectiveness, housing, transportation,),
economics (job security, economic development,),
culture (traditions, religious beliefs, philosophies, diversity, equity),
ecological (biological diversity, global environmental relationships), and  aesthetics (the beauty of life on the planet earth,).

At MSU we help students become this kind of designer, faculty conduct research across this spectrum and engage in outreach to integrate these five essential dimensions to create meaningful and successful environments. Jon
